Medical Coding is a Saving Grace for my Family

Hey, I’m Jeff and I’m going to teach you about hospital medical coding. In 2015 with no degree and 4 kids with another on the way I got injured in a non-work related accident. As a construction Forman, it was a real problem getting to job sites and being able to perform with my injuries.

Because of the sudden change in my situation and the need to keep my family healthy and happy; I found hospital medical coding!

What is Medical Coding?

To put it the most simply Medical coding is a job where you are taking medical charts, doctor notes, or diagnosis and turning them into alphanumeric codes for insurance companies and their billing. Coding the procedures and diagnosis correctly is what will determine if a procedure, medication, or patient visit will be paid or denied. I think its also important to point out that these coding procedures must be done in a timely manner or the insurance can deny the claim. Typically this is 24 to 48 hours.

Now, this is only a touch on the extent of what Medical Coding is in total. I, for instance, am a Hospital Coder meaning I get to see a more wide range of types of things to be coded.

One last thing I’m going to add in here. Medical Coders are passionate and love what they do! There is a lot of good that comes with this career but I learned the hard way when I started there are a lot of scammers and bad actors out there, but I will do my best to point you int he right direction and get you started on the path to becoming a Medical Coder!
